Kindergartners and 2nd Graders Find Out About Penguin "Fingerprints" and More at the Henry Doorly Zoo!

kids watching Twenty-seven kindergartners and thirteen second graders used distance learning to visit the penguin house at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha.
SPACER

Dear Kindergartners & 2nd-Graders,

Thank you for inviting me to watch the penguins from the Henry Doorly Zoo with you on Tuesday. I had fun meeting Grady, the black-footed penguin and watching the penguins hop around on the ice and chase bubbles in the penguin house.

I also learned a lot about penguins! How much do you remember about what Julie, Beth and DeNae told us? I've made a crossword puzzle with some of the information they shared with us ... it's right here online, so perhaps you and your classmates and your teachers can all work together to fill it out!

starspacerClick here for a cool online crossword puzzle and find out! This is where you will find a question about a penguin's "fingerprint!"

Hint: Even if the answer is two words, there will be NO space between those words.

You probably also remember that I took some pictures while you were watching the penguins ... just scroll down the page to look at them. I hope that the pictures and the puzzle will be a fun way for you to remember your distance-learning visit to the Henry Doorly Zoo!

Thanks again for inviting me to be part of your class,

Duveen Penner

Students at Centennial have worked hard to learn about penguins. This is a hallway display in their school.

They studied penguins from the largest - the Emperor penguin - all the way down to the Rockhopper and Little Blue Penguins!

Students wrote and posted lots of "penguin facts" in the hallway, too. And now it was time to make a virtual visit to real penguins at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha!

getting ready

Kindergartners and 2nd graders wait patiently in the distance learning room for the the Zoo to connect to us. SPACER

julie at the zoo

This is Julie at the Zoo. She was the guide for our visit. At the start of our visit, she explained how important it was to listen quietly and raise a hand if you had a question. And then it was time for the first "guest!" SPACER

meeting penguin

Beth is a keeper at the Zoo, and she brought Grady, a black-footed penguin, to visit with us. SPACER

brady

Grady is a South African black-footed penguin. She's a warm-weather penguin, so she doesn't like cold temperatures. Beth told us that Grady is twelve years old and weighs just about the same as a gallon of milk. She's a fast swimmer, too, like all penguins. She can swim up to 15 miles per hour! SPACER

Everyone paid close attention to the little black-footed penguin! Do you remember that when she eats her fish, she swallows them whole and head-first? And she can eat 15 fish at one meal! SPACER

fish

The penguins at the Zoo eat fish twice a day. To make sure the penguins get enough vitamins, keepers hide a vitamin pill in each fish mouth for the first "meal" of the day. Look carefully at the fish in the middle ... do you see the orange pill in its mouth? SPACER

asking questions

When Julie asked if we wanted to see more penguins, every hand went up! SPACER

in the penguin house

It was time to visit the cold weather penguins who live in the penguin house. There are four snow machines in the penguin house - if you left all of them on all the time, they could create 20 tons of snow a day! SPACER

in the penguin house

In the whole world, there are 17 types of penguins. The Henry Doorly Zoo houses five types of penguins. We were able to see three types in the penguin house: the Gentoo, the Rockhopper and the King penguins. SPACER

king penguins

These are King penguins. If you look carefully, you can see that the penguin in the middle is taking care of an egg. The King penguins are the only penguins at the Zoo that have a brood pouch. SPACER

king egg

The brood pouch is just big enough to cover an egg. DeNae showed us how big a King penguin egg is. The mother and the father penguins work together to take care of their chick. SPACER

blowing bubbles

Keepers who take care of the penguins have to work very hard to keep the penguin display clean and feed the penguins twice a day. But the keepers also get to play with the penguins. Sometimes they entertain the penguins by blowing soap bubbles for them to chase and pop! SPACER

thank you

A big thank you to Julie, DeNae and Beth for helping Centennial students learn about penguins! SPACER
