Thayer Central 2nd Graders Learn About Camouflage at the Lied Jungle

class picture Mrs. Hoops' 2nd grade students used distance learning technology to get a special look at animal camouflage at the Henry Doorly Zoo.
SPACER

Mrs. Hoops' 2nd graders had been busy learning about animal camouflage, and so they were ready with both questions AND answers during their distance learning connection to the Lied Jungle at the Henry Doorly Zoo.

Second graders visited with Sarah, an Educational Specialist at the Zoo and with Wendy, a zookeeper. Sarah and Wendy showed students many examples of animals that use camouflage to help protect themselves from predators. They also did a great job of answering questions that students had prepared.

How much do you remember about what Sarah and Wendy told you?

Hint: Even if the answer is two words, there will be NO space between those words.

If you have questions about planning an activity for your classroom, need help with ideas or learning how to use the equipment, just call 223-52277 or email me at dpenner@esu5.org.

I'm also more than happy to sit in on your distance learning session to help with questions or any little glitches.

getting ready

Mrs. Hoops used a distance learning media cart to connect to the Zoo. The image from the Zoo will be projected on the wall at the front of the classroom. SPACER

watching

Students are ready, and the connection is being made. The students can see and hear Sarah and Wendy at the Zoo, and Sarah and Wendy can see and hear the kids, too. SPACER

connected

Sarah asks the 2nd graders if they know what "camouflage" means. Every hand went up! SPACER

SPACER

lauris

For most animals, "blending in" is the simplest approach to camouflage. Wendy shows the class a pygmy slow lauris - a small nocturnal animal whose dark coloring makes it difficult to see at night. SPACER

SPACER

sloth

Look carefully - do you see the two-toed sloth in this picture? SPACER

SPACER

butterfly

Here is another example of "one-color camouflage." See the butterfly? It looks just like the leaves around it. SPACER

SPACER

watching

Students listened carefully and watched closely .... SPACER

SPACER

spotted owl

The snowy owl's markings help it blend in with snow and rocks in its habitat. SPACER

SPACER

frogs

Some animals use bright colors as camouflage. One of the best examples is the poison dart frog. Their bright color warns other animals that they are poisonous! SPACER

SPACER

bright birds

Some of the larger macaws are very brightly colored. When macaws are seen in the dark trees with bright splashes of sunlight, they are not as nearly noticeable as you might think. And maybe the bright colors help to attract a mate! SPACER

There was plenty of time for students to ask Sarah and Wendy questions. Some examples of student questions included:
