SNDLC hosts a Distance Learning Inservice at Homestead National Monument of America

In cooperation with K-Nection, the Homestead National Park, the Henry Doorly Zoo, and Dark Fiber Solutions, SNDLC staff hosted an all-day Distance Learning In-Service on March 3, 2005 for our new National Park partners.

The day was spent sharing information about SNDLC and our member schools, demonstrating how the distance learning equipment works, and discussing how the National Parks can make their resources available to members of SNDLC and to others around the world.

A highlight of the day featured an Internet I connection with elementary students at Bethany Elementary School in Connecticut.

Amy Garrett, Ranger educator at the Homestead, presented information about our nation's first homestead, and also demonstrated effective teaching methods in a distance learning environment.

Participants also met with Zoe Louton, Project Director of Interconnect Spanish, and Eryn Sunday. Eryn teaches Spanish to 750 elementary students a week over the distance learning system.

After a lunchtime Question & Answer Session with Zoe and Eryn, participants were connected as silent observers to Eryn's Spanish class with elementary students at Deshler Public Schools.

The day provided opportunities for our guests to learn about the SNDLC distance learning system, ask questions, and experience what it’s like to be both the host and a remote site.

We expect that the following National Park sites will have active connections with SNDLC by the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year:

For more information about these future sites, please contact SNDLC at sndlc@esu5.org or call 402-223-5277.
