An
exciting summer is on the horizon for SNDLC member schools!
Thanks
to funding from the K-Nection grant, SNDLC is planning several major
upgrades to enhance your distance education system. The upgrades
will be completed before the start of the 2004-2005 school year.
SOFTWARE
UPGRADES
Software
at all SNDLC sites will be upgraded to IPContact.*
Although the upgrade won't substantially change how you use the
distance learning system, SNDLC will provide an operation manual
with step-by-step instructions, ranging from starting a video
conference to shutting a conference down..

HARDWARE
UPGRADES
 |
SNDLC
will replace both rack-mounted static classroom CPU's and
the static classroom DL computer monitor. The
presentation computer and monitor remains the responsibility
of the SNDLC member. |
 |
If
you have a distance learning cart, that CPU will be replaced
|
 |
The
NT operating system on the system CPUs will be replaced with
Windows XP |
 |
Additional
hardware components necessary for the operation of the DL
system will be installed |
 |
Automatic
self-updating virus protection software will be installed
on all new CPUs |
 |
Every
DL system will automatically update its contact list as well
as necessary Microsoft operating system upgrades |
 |
Access
to Internet browsing on DL computers will be blocked |
 |
The
current fax system will be converted to IP telephony. The
end
result will create an audio/fax system within SNDLC static
and extended-cart classrooms. |
The
dollar value of the equipment and software upgrade per member
for the static classroom alone is around $2,500. If your site
includes a DL cart as well, the upgrade value jumps to $3,500.
The upgrade cost are being paid by the K-Nection grant. The SNDLC
board has agreed that the installation cost will be paid from
the SNDLC maintenance fund.
